Red-Spotted Newt (Notophthalmus v. viridescens)

One of four subspecies of the eastern newt which are part of the family salamandridae . They represent one of only seven newt species present on the continent. Like all amphibians, red-spotted newts act as environmental health indicators due to their sensitivity to disturbance such as pollutants and disease (Collins and Storfer 2003). Amphibians are declining world-wide at an alarming rate; the IUCN states that nearly 41 percent are threatened with extinction ( Romero et al. 2018) . Although the eastern newt species is listed as least concern, we should begin efforts now to ensure they are protected and do not become another amphibian species in decline. Adult Eastern Newt.
